Field Notes from Mull

Last week our Operations Coordinator Sarah joined our Spring into Scotland group on their two-night stay to the beautiful island of Mull. We asked her to share a few of her highlights from the trip.

"We got very lucky with the weather for our first day travelling to Mull and saw Black Guillemots and a solitary Great Northern Diver on the crossing. Before we even stepped foot off the boat our Guide Aidan had located a perched White-tailed Eagle in a tree and after that it was eagles galore for the next two days, with both Golden and their White-tailed cousins spotted frequently. There was a lot of excitement about Hooded Crows and I discovered that these birds are rare south of the Scottish Highlands – who knew!

My main excitement of the trip was Otters and our Guides Aidan and Andy worked tirelessly to ensure we enjoyed great views. We even opted for a later ferry crossing on our last day (despite the inclement weather) to continue searching for our furry friends. After a few close calls that turned out to be seaweed and Common Seals, we succeeded in sighting a close-up Otter sitting on a rock, only to see another one on our later ferry crossing bobbing out at sea! I bought some Otter socks in a shop in Tobermory to commemorate the trip and it’s safe to say we all had a great few days of birds and wildlife on the Isle of Mull!" - Sarah White
